Residents of Schuylkill County can look forward to a series of engaging community events throughout January and February 2024, offering diverse activities ranging from outdoor explorations to educational workshops. These events aim to foster community interaction and provide opportunities for learning and recreation.

Outdoor Activities and Nature Walks

On January 17, from 18:00 to 19:00, the Frog Hollow Nature Center in Friedensburg will host an “Outdoors Night Owl Prowl.” Led by birding expert Dave Kruel, participants will explore the fascinating world of owls. Attendees are advised to dress warmly, wear sturdy footwear, and bring a flashlight. Note that pets are not permitted at this event. For further details, interested individuals can contact Kruel at 570-640-1184.

Following that, on February 19 at 13:00, the Schuylkill Conservation District will lead a one-mile walk along a mostly paved path at Locust Lake. This family-friendly event allows both children and dogs to join in the exploration. The walk will commence at the Locust Lake visitor parking lot.

Another opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts is the “Landingville Marsh Meander,” scheduled for February 22 at 14:00. This two-mile hike will take participants along the historic John Bartram Trail, where they can view the base of America’s oldest transportation tunnel, constructed in 1827. The meeting point will be in the parking lot across from the Landingville Playground. Children are welcome, but dogs are not permitted.

Educational and Recreational Events

For those interested in reading and discussion, the Orwigsburg Library will host a Learning Book Club on January 26 at 17:30, featuring a discussion on “Diary of a Dying Girl” by Mallory Smith. Additionally, the Recipe Club will meet on February 7 at 12:30, inviting participants to share their culinary creations under the theme “Cook with Love.” Registration is required due to limited space.

The Penn State Schuylkill will offer a complimentary three-part series titled “Everyday AI for Business” on February 18, 25, and March 4, each session running from 11:30 to 13:00. This workshop aims to help participants understand and utilize artificial intelligence in business. A light lunch will be provided, and registration is necessary.

Moreover, a “LinkedIn for Startups & Marketers” lesson will be held remotely via Zoom on February 18 at 18:00, as part of initiatives at Penn State Schuylkill. Interested participants can find more information through the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce at 570-622-1942 or by emailing [email protected].

Health and Wellness Programs

Health-conscious individuals can take part in various exercise programs throughout the area. For example, a free Exercise Club aimed at improving balance, strength, and flexibility will be held for people aged 50 and older. This program runs on Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Orwigsburg.

Additionally, the Orwigsburg Library will offer a Chair Yoga session on January 31 at 10:00. Another option is the Indoor Walking Club, which meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 to 11:00 at the Veterans Community Memorial Hall in Orwigsburg.

For those looking to participate in group activities, the Age Busters Exercise Club meets on Wednesdays at 10:30 at St. John’s United Church of Christ, providing an opportunity for attendees to engage in fitness activities designed for older adults.
