Davis Student Sarah Luckenbill Wins Day of Remembrance Contest

Sarah Luckenbill, a seventh-grade student at Emerson Jr. High in Davis, has been recognized as the winner of the Day of Remembrance Poster Contest held on February 19, 2024. Her artwork, titled “Never Again,” earned her a prize of $50 and highlights the poignant history of Japanese American incarceration during World War II.

The contest was part of a broader event commemorating Executive Order 9066, which led to the forced relocation and incarceration of Japanese Americans. The ceremony included an exhibit at Davis City Hall, where Luckenbill’s poster was displayed alongside other contributions.

In her creative process, Luckenbill drew inspiration from a recent family visit to the Tule Lake WWII incarceration camp. She learned about the experiences of Japanese Americans from the East Bay who faced unjust imprisonment due to their heritage. “Hearing their stories deeply affected me,” Luckenbill shared, emphasizing the importance of remembering these significant historical events.

Pattie Fong, the coordinator of the Day of Remembrance event, expressed her enthusiasm for Luckenbill’s achievement. She noted the importance of young voices in conveying historical narratives, stating, “It is encouraging to see a seventh grader demonstrate such a profound understanding of the Japanese American incarceration.”

Luckenbill’s artwork not only earned recognition but also serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of history on contemporary society. Through her poster, she aims to foster awareness and dialogue about these critical issues, ensuring that past injustices are not forgotten.
