A severe winter storm is set to affect more than 235 million Americans across 40 states this weekend, raising concerns about the potential health risks associated with a common winter accessory: snow boots. Dr. Rock G. Positano, a podiatrist at the Hospital for Special Surgery, cautions that while many believe snow boots offer adequate protection against the cold, they may actually pose more dangers than benefits.

Dr. Positano emphasizes the importance of being cautious with footwear during winter weather. He states, “With the possibility of a winter storm approaching this weekend, it’s important for every New Yorker to be aware of the foot and ankle problems that can be caused or worsened by wearing snow boots.” He explains that, despite their appearance of safety, snow boots generally lack proper orthopedic support, which can lead to overuse of tendons and ligaments. This situation increases the risk of painful injuries, especially during long walks in snowy or wet conditions.

The podiatrist also highlights the potential for knee and back problems stemming from inadequate support, particularly for individuals with pre-existing orthopedic issues. In addition to biomechanical concerns, Dr. Positano warns that snow boots may not provide the insulation that many assume they do. This can result in skin problems such as frostbite and ulceration, especially for those with sensitive skin. He stresses the importance of choosing footwear that can withstand harsh weather while accommodating any skin conditions.

Particular attention should be paid to individuals with poor circulation or a history of ankle, heel, or foot issues, as they are especially vulnerable to the effects of subpar boots. For those who must venture outside during the storm, Dr. Positano offers several guidelines to mitigate risks. He previously referred to heel pain as the “great imposter,” which can mask various other conditions, including psoriasis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and even blood clots.

He urges individuals not to dismiss any discomfort, warning, “Don’t trivialize its presence, as this pain may have many origins ranging from musculoskeletal trauma to cancer.” While such pain may not be life-threatening, it can significantly impact one’s quality of life.

As the winter storm approaches, it is crucial for individuals to reassess their footwear choices. By prioritizing proper support and insulation, they can better protect themselves against the cold while avoiding potential long-term health issues.
