Gingerbread Architects Showcase Creativity in Chico Contest
The inaugural Chico Community Gingerbread House Contest showcased a delightful fusion of architecture and culinary artistry this weekend. Held at the Museum of Northern California Art, the event featured seven unique entries crafted by local participants ranging from young children to adults. Each gingerbread house was designed to be at least 80% edible, according to Pat Macias, the museum’s Executive Director.
The contest drew inspiration from the prestigious National Gingerbread House Competition in Asheville, North Carolina. Organizers Jodi Drysdale and Pam Young from the Downtown Chico Business Association played pivotal roles in bringing this creative endeavor to life.
Participants showcased their skills through various imaginative designs, including the El Rey Theater, a cherished childhood home, a haunted chapel, and a whimsical sugar wonderland. These entries not only highlight the artistic talents of the community but also celebrate the festive spirit of the season.
Winners of the contest will be announced during the exhibit’s reception today from 15:00 to 16:00. A panel of judges will evaluate the entries based on several categories, including best in category, best overall, and the coveted people’s choice award. This event marks a significant moment for the Chico community, establishing a new tradition of creativity and competition around the holidays.
As the gingerbread houses stand on display, they serve as a reminder of the vibrant community spirit in Chico. With local talents coming together to create these edible masterpieces, the contest has set the stage for future events that blend art, architecture, and culinary skills in a fun and engaging way.
