Howard Hughes’ Iconic ‘Spruce Goose’ Takes Flight on November 2
On November 2, 1947, aviation pioneer Howard Hughes successfully piloted the Hughes H-4 Hercules, better known as the Spruce Goose, during its sole flight. This momentous event took place in Long Beach, California, where the massive wooden seaplane, featuring a wingspan of over 97 meters—longer than a football field—remained airborne for a brief but historic 26 seconds.
Hughes, who was also a film producer and businessman, designed the aircraft during World War II to transport troops and materials. Despite its impressive size and innovative design, the Spruce Goose was not completed in time to serve its intended purpose. The flight on this day remains a significant milestone in aviation history, showcasing the ambition and vision of Hughes, despite the aircraft’s limited operational use.
