The mobile application “Are You Dead?” has become the top paid app on China’s Apple App Store, highlighting the growing concerns around loneliness in modern society. For just 8 Chinese yuan (approximately $1.15), users can designate an emergency contact and check in daily by pressing a bright green button featuring a cartoon ghost. If users do not check in for two consecutive days, the app automatically sends an email to their designated contact on the third day.

This innovative tool aims to provide reassurance to millions of individuals in China who navigate life alone. The app emerges at a time when China faces significant demographic challenges, including an aging population and the long-lasting effects of its previous one-child policy. Rapid urbanization is also shifting lifestyles, with many people moving from rural areas to cities, often leaving family support behind. According to the Global Times, China is projected to have as many as 200 million one-person households by 2030, with the percentage of individuals living alone exceeding 30%.

Understanding the App’s Appeal

On its English-language page, where it is known as “Demumu,” the app is described as a “lightweight safety tool crafted for solo dwellers.” It is explicitly aimed at various demographics, including solo office workers and students living independently. The developers emphasize its purpose to serve as a “safety companion” for those leading solitary lifestyles.

The app’s blunt name has generated significant online discussion in China, with users expressing mixed feelings about its direct approach to such a sensitive topic. Some users have suggested that the app could benefit from enhancements, such as the ability to text emergency contacts instead of relying solely on email notifications. Others have called for a reconsideration of its name, which playfully references the popular Chinese food delivery app “Are You Hungry?”—a title that resonates with the app’s own Chinese name, “Si-le-ma,” which sounds similar.

A small team of three Gen Z developers, born after 1995, expressed their gratitude for the app’s popularity. “We feel honored and deeply grateful to receive such widespread attention,” they stated in communication with the Global Times. They are currently considering updates that could include messaging options and features tailored for elderly users. A name change is also under consideration.

Global Context of Solo Living Trends

While the app has gained traction in China, it is not solely a local phenomenon. “Demumu” is currently ranked as the sixth top-paid app in the United States, a trend that may reflect the experiences of Chinese immigrants living abroad. The broader context reveals that the rise in solo living is a global trend. According to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 27.6% of all occupied households in the United States were one-person households in 2020, a significant increase from just 7.7% in 1940.

As societal structures shift and more people embrace solitary lifestyles, applications like “Are You Dead?” demonstrate a growing recognition of the need for connection and safety in an increasingly isolated world. The app not only reflects current social dynamics but also offers a solution to address the emotional and safety concerns of those living alone.
