The North Coast Growers’ Association (NCGA) has initiated its “Rooted in Resilience: Community Giving Campaign,” aiming to raise $10,000 by December 31, 2023. This campaign invites local residents and businesses to invest in the strength and sustainability of Humboldt County’s food system. The funds will support various programs designed to nourish families, bolster local farmers, and enhance community resilience amid growing challenges.

Supporting Local Food Systems

For over 45 years, NCGA has managed certified farmers markets, which serve as vital hubs for shopping, community interaction, and support for local agriculture. These markets play a crucial role in maintaining a vibrant regional food economy. According to a NCGA press release, “This year has brought significant strain to communities throughout Humboldt County. Rising costs, unstable funding, and disruptions in food access programs have left many families navigating uncertainty.”

In response to recent interruptions in federal SNAP and CalFresh benefits, NCGA stepped in to ensure that families relying on farmers markets could access fresh food. The need for dependable food infrastructure has become increasingly urgent, particularly as climate-related events threaten rural areas.

Fund Allocation and Community Involvement

The funds raised through the campaign will support essential initiatives, including hands-on training for beginning farmers, which is vital for keeping agricultural land productive and fostering a new generation of growers in Humboldt County. Additionally, the campaign will focus on developing critical food infrastructure in rural communities, which can serve as access points during emergencies and natural disasters.

NCGA will also utilize the funds for distributing fresh food to schools, tribal communities, and local food banks through its Harvest Hub. The press release emphasizes the importance of community involvement, stating, “Community support through participation, cooperation, donations, and sponsorships ensures that this work can continue to grow and serve those who need it most.”

Local businesses are encouraged to participate by offering fundraising matches, which can significantly enhance the impact of donations and encourage broader community engagement. Businesses interested in partnering with NCGA can reach out for further details.

Portia Bramble, executive director of NCGA, highlighted the crucial role of community support, stating, “We rely on community support, through your commitment to shopping locally at our farmers markets and your donations, to keep our local food system and community strong.” Every contribution will help sustain programs that ensure healthy food reaches all residents across Humboldt County.
