Operation Holiday Supports Local Families During the Festive Season

Isabel, a mother of three living in the Pottsgrove area, has found crucial support from Operation Holiday as she navigates challenging times. Health issues have prevented her from working, yet she remains optimistic and grateful. Her story highlights the importance of community assistance during the festive season.

Isabel recalls reading about Operation Holiday as a child in The Mercury. She felt a deep connection to those stories and always hoped to give back one day. Now, with the help of the Montgomery County Assistance Office, she has received vital services including food stamps and cash assistance. “They’ve helped me out a lot over the years,” she said, reflecting on the support that has made a significant difference for her family.

The holidays can be particularly challenging for families like Isabel’s. Despite facing difficulties such as a broken heater and ongoing car troubles, they made Thanksgiving possible with support from local food pantries and the Salvation Army. As Christmas approaches, her daughters have their own wishes. The eldest desires gift cards and art supplies, while the younger ones are hoping for skin care products and winter clothing.

The impact of state and federal budget issues has not gone unnoticed by Isabel. “I had to push around my bills to make ends meet, but I made it all work,” she explained. Although she is currently a week behind on payments, she has utilized food pantries to help alleviate some of the financial strain. Her youngest daughter, who has a pacemaker and has undergone multiple heart surgeries, adds another layer of difficulty to their situation. “It’s rough, but I’m still grateful for what I have,” she stated.

Isabel also believes in the importance of paying it forward. She assists friends in need by sharing food or offering rides to pantries. “If I was ever in a position to donate, I would donate myself,” she said, recognizing that many people face even tougher circumstances.

Operation Holiday has been a beacon of hope since its inception in 1991, aimed at helping families provide for their children during the holidays. Now in its 35th year, the program serves thousands across Berks, Chester, and Montgomery counties. Last year, it raised nearly $85,000, providing gift cards to 366 children and grocery gift cards to 189 families.

In 2023, Operation Holiday has partnered with 21 agencies in the tri-county area, referring 199 families with 403 children for gifts and food assistance. It operates with no overhead costs, ensuring that all funds raised stay within the local community. Contributions are managed by MediaNews Group staff who volunteer their time for this cause.

Gift cards to local grocery stores, such as Weis Markets, allow families to purchase food for holiday meals and pantry staples. Additionally, gift cards for children aged 16 and younger are provided through Boscov’s, enabling families to select gifts that suit their children’s preferences.

Operation Holiday only accepts families referred by partner agencies, ensuring that support reaches those most in need. The program is entirely funded by reader contributions, which are tax-deductible. Donations can be made online through a secure portal provided by TriCounty Community Network or mailed to designated addresses.
