Parents Criticize Pennsylvania School for Political Activism at Fair

A Pennsylvania school district is facing backlash after Jewish parents expressed concerns that a Muslim student club used a high school culture fair to promote pro-Palestinian activism. The incident occurred on November 27, 2023, at Wissahickon High School, where various clubs showcased cultural traditions. Parents reported that the Muslim Students of America (MSA) chapter’s display went beyond cultural representation, leading to feelings of intimidation among some students.

Parents, including Lynn Simon, conveyed their distress, stating that their children felt unsafe discussing their Jewish identity after observing the activities. Simon remarked, “My child came home shaken and unsure of whether it’s even safe to speak up as a Jew at school.” Images shared on social media depicted Superintendent Dr. Mwenyewe Dawan and Assistant Superintendent Sean Gardiner actively visiting the booths, while Principal Dr. Lynne Blair later shared, then removed, photographs from the event.

The controversy intensified as parents highlighted slogans displayed at the fair, such as “Jerusalem is ours,” and the distribution of keffiyehs, a traditional Arab garment that has become a political symbol. Critics argued that the event crossed a line from cultural celebration to political activism, suggesting that it reflected a lack of neutrality among school leadership. Simon stated, “When the principal is posting pictures of students wearing slogans like ‘Jerusalem is ours,’ and the superintendent is encouraging illegal minor-led games of chance, that’s not education — it’s indoctrination.”

Steve Rosenberg, the Philadelphia director for the North American Values Institute, criticized the school district’s approach, calling it “educational malpractice.” He emphasized the problem of merging cultural expression with political messaging, asserting that schools should foster critical thinking rather than create environments of intimidation.

In a letter signed by dozens of Jewish parents and obtained by Fox News Digital, several incidents were outlined that they claimed violated educational and ethical standards. The letter pointed out that the presence of school administrators at the MSA booth suggested endorsement of the political messaging, which many parents found alarming. They argued, “Using financial or material incentives to draw students into a politically charged display is inappropriate and coercive.”

Additionally, the letter raised concerns over the imagery associated with the phrase “Jerusalem is ours,” asserting that it undermines Jewish identity and history. During a board meeting on December 1, 2023, the MSA president defended the use of the phrase, stating, “Jerusalem is currently a conflict zone in which two parties are actually fighting over it.” The president claimed the statement was written in Arabic to prevent misunderstandings among Jewish students.

The parents’ letter called for several actions from the district, including clarification on how keffiyehs were distributed, an explanation regarding the principal’s social media post, and the establishment of guidelines to separate cultural programming from political advocacy. They requested a listening session to allow Jewish families to express their concerns directly to school officials.

The letter concluded with a statement emphasizing the need for schools to be safe and neutral spaces where all identities are respected. It asserted, “What happened this week undermines that principle and has caused real fear among Jewish students who now wonder whether their district will protect them — or leave them to navigate this climate alone.”
