Pharmacy staff at the Walgreens in Montgomery have been recognized for their exceptional ability to manage a high-pressure environment, often described as “organized chaos.” This 24-hour location features two drive-thru lanes and frequently experiences long lines, particularly during peak hours. Customers have observed the staff’s remarkable efficiency in handling multiple tasks while maintaining a positive demeanor.

According to the staff, the term “organized chaos” accurately reflects the challenges they face daily. The pharmacy often sees numerous customers, with some waiting in line while others use the drive-thru. On a recent visit, it was common to witness at least eight cars queued up at the drive-thru, alongside a bustling store filled with patrons seeking assistance.

Meet the Team Behind the Counter

Leading the Montgomery Walgreens is Pharmacy Manager Jeff Stacey, who has dedicated two decades to the company, with eight years at this location. His responsibilities encompass overseeing patient needs, legal compliance, and business operations. Stacey summarized his role succinctly: “Day to day operations, filling prescriptions and dealing with problems. And regarding problems, the buck stops with me.” He praises his team, stating, “Our staff is great. They work hard and are always trying their best. They’re out there trying to help people.”

Staff Pharmacist Stephanie McGinnis, who also has 20 years of experience, has been at the Montgomery store for 14 years. She highlighted the increased stress levels in retail pharmacy since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. “It has been a lot of stress with a limited staff and more prescriptions. We’re giving immunizations and doing COVID testing, which puts more demands on our staff,” McGinnis explained. She remains passionate about her work, enjoying the opportunity to help patients feel better.

The team also includes Certified Pharmacy Technician Sandy Macias, who has contributed to the pharmacy for a decade. Macias, who often serves as the first point of contact for customers, emphasizes the importance of communication and problem-solving in her role. “I’m a people person, and I really like helping customers,” she said. Her experience allows her to handle various customer inquiries, even during particularly hectic periods.

Facing Challenges with Empathy

Macias described how the pharmacy staff cope with busy times, noting that understanding customer frustration can be key. “I realize that in my job, customers are sick. I try to remember that even when I do get a little bit upset, many customers are sick and have to wait in a line. I try to put myself in their shoes, and that’s what helps me to cope,” she stated.

The pharmacy employs approximately ten technicians, although not all work simultaneously. Each technician plays a crucial role in managing the flow of customers and addressing their needs. Macias is bilingual, a skill that has proven invaluable in assisting patients who speak different languages.

The challenges faced by pharmacy staff extend beyond customer interactions. They must also navigate complex relationships with healthcare providers and insurance companies, adding another layer of complexity to their daily responsibilities. Despite the pressures, the team at Walgreens Montgomery continues to exemplify dedication and professionalism.

As customers, it is essential to recognize the efforts of pharmacy staff during these demanding times. The work they do contributes significantly to community health and well-being. A simple “thank you” can go a long way in acknowledging their hard work and commitment to service.
