Pope Leo XIV Appoints Bishop Bejarano to Lead Monterey Diocese

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Ramón Bejarano, the Auxiliary Bishop of San Diego, as the new bishop of the Diocese of Monterey. The Vatican announced this decision earlier this week, marking a significant leadership change within the Roman Catholic Church in California.

Bishop Bejarano, 56, has been an auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of San Diego since 2020 and serves as the titular bishop of Carpi. Bejarano succeeds Bishop Daniel E. Garcia, who was appointed bishop of Austin, Texas, in July. The Diocese of Monterey spans approximately 21,916 square miles along California’s Central Coast and serves a Catholic population of about 368,150 within a total population of roughly 1.04 million residents.

Bejarano’s journey to this role is marked by diverse experiences. Born in Texas and partly raised in Mexico, he later moved to California’s Central Valley. There, he worked in agriculture and hotel maintenance to support his family before entering the seminary. He was ordained as a priest in 1998 for the Diocese of Stockton. Throughout his career, Bejarano has overseen various ministries focusing on ethnic and intercultural communities, as well as initiatives related to life, peace, justice, and interreligious affairs in San Diego.
