Remembering John S. Hartpence: A Life of Family and Joy

John S. Hartpence, affectionately known as Jack, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2025, in Ocala, Florida. He was 77 years old. Jack was born on March 19, 1948, in Hudson Falls, New York, to John and Mildred Hartpence. His life was marked by love, family, and a deep appreciation for the great outdoors.

Jack graduated from Hudson Falls High School before pursuing further education at SUNY Plattsburgh, where he earned his degree in 1970. It was during his time at Plattsburgh that he met his wife, Dorothy (Dot) Doyle, whom he married the same year. Together, they raised two sons, John and Geoffrey, who later blessed Jack with the joy of five grandchildren: Ben, Kiera, Lily, Emma, and Jack.

Jack’s professional journey began at Aetna before he became a Personal Account Representative at Travelers Insurance Company. In addition to his career, he proudly served in the Army National Guard, embodying a spirit of dedication and service.

Life for Jack revolved around family. He was known as a true gentleman with an infectious sense of humor. His happiest moments were spent playing sports with his sons in their backyard, a tradition he continued with his grandchildren. Jack showcased his competitive spirit on the basketball court with Ben and cheered for Kiera at her volleyball games throughout high school and college. He shared countless hours of laughter and strategy while playing board games with Lily and Emma, and he loved teasing his namesake, young Jack.

Reflecting on his childhood, Jack fondly remembered time spent at his grandfather’s farm in Jay, New York. His love for nature led him to travel extensively, exploring national parks in the western United States, with a particular fondness for Yellowstone National Park. He cherished his last visit there two years prior, creating lasting memories with his sons.

Jack is predeceased by his parents and several aunts and uncles. He is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy, his sons John (Laura) and Geoffrey (Courtney), and his beloved grandchildren. Additionally, he leaves behind his siblings: Mary Gordon, Jim Hartpence, Tim (Mary) Hartpence, and Sue (Jeff) Curren, along with numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

A celebration of Jack’s life will take place within his community at Summerglen in Ocala, Florida, and in Hudson Falls during late spring.
