Remembering Thomas “Tom” Russell II: A Life of Service and Family

Thomas “Tom” Russell II, aged 86, of Stillwater, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at home on January 9, 2026. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Tom leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication to his family and community.

Born on July 28, 1939, in Minneapolis to Kenneth and Gladys Amberg Russell, Tom was a lifelong resident of Minnesota. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judith (Judie) Russell; their three children, Thomas (Tom), Katherine (Katie), and Molly; and his granddaughter, Mckenzie Ferguson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marilyn Mortensen.

Education and Military Service

A committed Catholic, Tom was actively involved in his faith community, particularly at Holy Spirit Church in St. Paul and Saint Michael’s Church in Stillwater. He graduated from St. Thomas University with a degree in pre-med before attending the University of Minnesota Medical School. Following his education, Tom completed his residency in internal medicine at the renowned Mayo Clinic and further specialized in cardiology at the University of Oregon Medical Center.

Tom served as a Major in the U.S. Air Force, where he held the position of hospital director at Clovis Air Force Base in Clovis, New Mexico. His military service exemplified his commitment to healthcare and the well-being of others.

A Legacy of Care and Compassion

Tom was known for his profound dedication to his patients, often going above and beyond to provide exceptional care. He fostered a deep sense of compassion, which endeared him to many, including numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

In his personal life, Tom enjoyed a variety of interests, including a passion for family gatherings, hunting, and traveling the world. He had a particular fondness for Labrador retrievers, which became a cherished part of his life.

Funeral service details are currently pending and will be made available at O’Halloran and Murphy Funeral Home, located at 575 Snelling Avenue South, St. Paul, MN 55116. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are preferred to the University of Minnesota Medical School Scholarship Fund, supporting future generations of medical professionals.

Tom Russell’s legacy is one of unwavering love for his family and a commitment to the betterment of his community, a life well-lived that will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
