Rose Parade to Honor Fire Survivors with Special Floats and Events

The upcoming 2026 Rose Parade and Rose Bowl game will pay tribute to the victims and survivors of the devastating wildfires that struck the greater Los Angeles area nearly a year ago. On January 7, 2025, the Eaton Fire ravaged communities in Palisades and the Altadena/Pasadena area, forever altering lives and landscapes. As the parade approaches, the Tournament of Roses has outlined plans to honor these communities through special floats and events.

A Year of Recovery and Reflection

The aftermath of the Eaton Fire led to significant challenges for the affected communities. The Rose Bowl stadium parking lot transformed into a temporary base camp for thousands of first responders fighting the blaze. As recovery efforts progressed, the Tournament of Roses announced its theme for the 2026 celebration: “The Magic in Teamwork.” According to Mark Leavens, President of the Tournament of Roses, this theme aims to highlight the importance of collective effort in overcoming adversity.

“The greatest achievements we have in life are not done alone,” Leavens remarked. He noted that while the theme was chosen prior to the fires, it resonates deeply with the ongoing recovery efforts. In a significant gesture of support, the Tournament has distributed thousands of tickets to fire survivors for the parade, the Rose Bowl game, and the accompanying Floatfest.

Floats and Honoring Resilience

Among the notable entries, the float titled “Rising Together,” presented by the California Community Foundation and the Black Freedom Fund, will serve as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by the communities of Altadena, Pasadena, Pacific Palisades, and Malibu. This float features a large phoenix, California native plants, and elements that depict the San Gabriel Mountains and the shoreline, symbolizing rebirth and resilience.

Fire survivors and representatives from local nonprofits will be featured on the float, showcasing the community’s spirit and determination. Nic Arnzen, a member of the Altadena Town Council who lost his home in the fire, expressed his gratitude for this recognition. “Honoring these families is intended to shine a light on our loss and continuing struggle,” Arnzen stated. “They represent countless others who feel the same painful impact.”

Another float, titled “Food for Health,” created by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, will include local business owners and firefighters who aided in recovery efforts by providing meals to those affected by the fires. The float represents the community’s commitment to health and support during difficult times.

As a further tribute, Leavens and Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo will ride on vintage fire engines during the parade. Leavens will be aboard a 1967 Crown Firecoach fire engine, while Gordo will ride a 1937 American LaFrance fire engine, both emblematic of the local fire service’s history and dedication.

The Sierra Madre Rose Float Association will also contribute with a float called “Pancake Breakfast,” featuring a giant fire truck humorously pouring syrup onto pancakes. While the lighthearted nature of this float has drawn mixed reactions, the organizers have adjusted the presentation in response to community feedback.

The Rose Parade, set for January 1, 2026, will not only celebrate the start of a new year but also the resilience of communities coming together to heal and rebuild. With its tribute to those affected by the fire, the event seeks to inspire hope and unity in the face of adversity.
