Seattle Fire Department Reflects on Challenges and Achievements in 2025

The Seattle Fire Department (SFD) reported significant developments in 2025, highlighting operational responses, community service initiatives, and challenges faced throughout the year. In a recent message, Chief Harold Scoggins detailed the department’s activities, which included local emergency responses and support efforts outside of Washington state.

Operational Highlights and Community Engagement

In his recap, Chief Scoggins emphasized the importance of SFD’s community engagement, particularly in recruitment efforts. The department experienced a surge in applications during the fall firefighter/EMT hiring cycle, indicating strong interest in joining the ranks. Scoggins also paid tribute to Firefighter/Paramedic Larry Doll, who passed away unexpectedly, thanking the community for its ongoing support.

Among the year’s notable accomplishments was the graduation of seven firefighter/paramedics after completing a rigorous nine-month training program. Scoggins noted that these new personnel enhance the department’s capacity to serve the community effectively.

Additionally, the Seattle Fire Department expanded its services related to overdose response. This included the establishment of a Post Overdose Response Team, which operates a pop-up clinic providing long-acting injectable buprenorphine. Collaborations with various organizations have also led to the creation of a recovery center, further demonstrating SFD’s commitment to addressing community health concerns.

Emergency Response and Challenges

In January, SFD personnel were deployed to Los Angeles to assist in wildfire response efforts, showcasing their readiness to support other regions in times of crisis. The department also introduced new tools and equipment to enhance its operational capacity. This includes the acquisition of a third rescue watercraft and upgrades to fire stations, featuring new fitness equipment and rescue swimmer wetsuits, funded through the Seattle Fire Foundation.

Throughout the year, SFD faced operational challenges, notably responding to a series of arson fires in the Columbia City neighborhood. Chief Scoggins acknowledged these incidents as part of the complex landscape the department navigated in 2025.
