Sweden Secures First Gold at IIHF World Junior Championship Since 2012

Sweden triumphed over Czechia with a decisive 4-2 victory, capturing its first gold medal at the IIHF World Junior Championship since 2012. This victory, achieved on March 11, 2024, at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, marks a significant turnaround for Sweden, which had faced disappointment as a runner-up four times in the previous 14 years.

The match was characterized by a tense finale. The Swedes established a commanding 3-0 lead, showcasing their skills throughout the first 57 minutes. However, as Czechia pulled goaltender Michal Orsulak for an extra attacker, the game took a dramatic turn. Adam Jiricek scored just 56 seconds after the goalkeeper’s departure, and Matej Kubiesa added another goal with only 23.2 seconds remaining, raising the stakes for Sweden.

Despite the late surge from Czechia, Sweden remained composed. Defenseman Sascha Boumedienne expressed confidence in the team’s ability to prevail. “We all knew we were going to end up on top,” he stated. “We just had that feeling together. We stuck together.”

Victor Eklund, a forward for Sweden, reflected on the significance of the victory. “It means everything,” he said during a FaceTime call with his brother, William, who plays for the San Jose Sharks. Eklund emphasized the importance of the win for young players back home, describing it as “one of the best feelings I’ve ever had.”

The scoring opened with Casper Juustovaara netting a goal early in the first period. He capitalized on a delayed penalty, receiving an assist from Jack Berglund. “I just black out when I scored,” Juustovaara remarked. “This is what we wanted when we went into the tournament. It’s a big win for the country.”

Eklund doubled the lead with a power-play goal, marking Sweden’s tenth conversion on the man-advantage during the tournament. Boumedienne extended the lead to 3-0, celebrating wildly after his goal. “I just started sprinting out to center ice. I was just so happy,” he recalled.

Sweden’s goaltender, Love Harenstam, was instrumental in their success, stopping 27 of 29 shots and earning the Directorate Award for the tournament’s top goaltender. Harenstam made history as the first Swedish goaltender to win this honor since Hugo Havelid in 2023. Reflecting on his performance, he acknowledged the support from his teammates and coaching staff. “I’m just so happy,” he stated.

The tournament also recognized standout players, with Anton Frondell receiving the Directorate Award for the best forward, the first from Sweden since Filip Forsberg in 2014. Czech defenseman Jiricek was awarded the top defenseman honor, while Vojtech Cihar earned the title of Most Valuable Player for his impressive performance, which included four goals and eight assists in seven games.

The win serves as a powerful reminder of Sweden’s storied hockey tradition. The last time the team claimed gold was in 2012 when they defeated Russia 1-0 in overtime. Eklund, now wearing a gold medal, noted the intense rivalry with Czechia. “We’ve played Czechia a few times,” he said. “I was just so sure we were going to win, no doubt about it.”

As the team celebrated its victory, Viggo Bjorck, the youngest player on the squad and a promising prospect for the 2026 draft, encapsulated the emotional weight of the moment. “It’s super hard to describe that feeling. You just have to be in that moment and live it,” he explained. “This is what we live for.”
