Vallejo Kicks Off MLK Weekend with Youth-Focused Events

The NAACP Vallejo Branch launched its inaugural three-day Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend, titled “Mission Possible II,” on January 13, 2024. The event, held at Hogan Middle School, was designed to engage the local youth and celebrate the legacy of Dr. King through various activities.

Patricia Hunter, the President of the NAACP Vallejo Branch, reflected on the significance of returning to her former high school, where she first learned about Dr. King. “This is my real dream to be back at my old high school and helping kids learn about Martin Luther King,” Hunter said. The day’s events included a youth basketball camp, interactive games, community resources engagement, and a youth panel, all aimed at inspiring the next generation.

Community organizations, such as the Vallejo City Unified School District, Vallejo IHART, and the Solano County Library, collaborated to ensure a successful event. Local Greek-letter organizations also contributed, reinforcing community ties.

The planning for this extensive event started nearly four months prior, led by Pastor Zaniel Young. “We worked diligently the last three months to bring this together. Seeing the community come together has been a real joy,” he stated. Young emphasized the importance of focusing on the youth during the weekend, stating, “The focus today on the youth has been phenomenal.”

As part of the program, speakers such as Jameelah Hanif highlighted the crucial role of youth in fostering community awareness. “The youth are always watching their older siblings and parents, no matter what they do,” Hanif noted, encouraging attendees to share information about available resources.

The celebration continues on January 14, 2024, with a special Sunday service at Union Baptist Church, located at 128 Encerti Ave in Vallejo, starting at 15:00. The weekend will culminate on January 15, 2024, with a march beginning at 09:00 at Wells Fargo Bank, located at 1702 Tennessee St., culminating at Hogan Middle School.

Hunter expressed her excitement about the march returning to Tennessee Street after last year’s event was held at the waterfront. “This takes us back to the old way of doing business. The waterfront march was a brisk walk. This is an actual march and gives us time to have conversations as we march,” she explained. The event promises a vibrant atmosphere, with participation from local lowriders and RVs, showcasing unity within the community.

This MLK Weekend is not just a celebration; it serves as a reminder of the values Dr. King stood for, including unity, community engagement, and the importance of educating the youth on their history.
