Williamsburg Nonprofits Rally to Support Holiday Needs

As the holiday season approaches, nonprofits in the Williamsburg area are mobilizing to assist individuals and families facing food insecurity and other challenges. With only weeks until Christmas, these organizations are gathering food, toys, and resources to support those in need. The Williamsburg Health Foundation has stepped up by donating $130,000 to help address an unprecedented rise in demand for assistance, particularly in the area of food.

According to Deanna Van Hersh, president and CEO of the Williamsburg Health Foundation, community partners have reported a significant increase in requests for help, with some organizations noting a rise of over 30% in the number of people seeking assistance. As families grapple with the challenges of providing adequate food for their households, the need for community support remains critical.

Key Organizations Making an Impact

Several local nonprofits are stepping forward to make a difference this holiday season.

Williamsburg Area Meals on Wheels is holding its annual holiday fundraiser aimed at raising funds to deliver nutritious meals to seniors, veterans, and disabled adults. Executive Director Catherine Upton emphasized the importance of this initiative, particularly in light of rising costs and the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. “No one should have to choose between eating and staying healthy,” Upton stated. The organization is accepting monetary donations online and by mail, ensuring that every senior or disabled individual has access to essential meals.

Another key player is the Grove Christian Outreach Center, which collects food donations year-round. In addition to food, the center is hosting its annual toy drive for children, seeking various types of toys for different age groups. Additional Support Initiatives

The Norge Dental Center is also getting involved by accepting nonperishable food items for the holiday season. Following a successful Thanksgiving donation of 270 items to FISH Inc., they continue to encourage community contributions. Donations can be delivered during business hours or via a donation bin available on their porch at 7450 Richmond Road.

FISH Inc. is welcoming both food and monetary donations throughout the holiday period. Vice President Maura Rush noted the organization’s ongoing efforts to support families facing food insecurity. Donations can be made at their location, 312 2nd St., Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Additionally, the A Way Home initiative, launched by York County Commonwealth’s Attorney Krystyn Reid, focuses on supporting families experiencing housing instability or domestic violence. Running through January 1, 2024, this initiative encourages donations of new blankets, towels, hygiene items, and children’s toys. Items can be dropped off at the United Way office located at 101 York Crossing Road, Yorktown, VA 23692.
