Carol Obando-Derstine Gains Support from Prominent Latina Leaders

Carol Obando-Derstine, a Democratic candidate for Congress in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, has garnered significant support from a group of prominent Latina politicians. On Thursday, she received endorsements from U.S. Representatives Nanette Barragan, Linda Sanchez, Andrea Salinas, and Veronica Escobar. Obando-Derstine’s campaign aims to represent the interests of the local community, particularly as the district’s population includes approximately 20% Latino residents.

Obando-Derstine, a former engineer and regional affairs director for PPL, announced her candidacy in May 2023. She is the only woman and Latina in the race for Congress in the Lehigh Valley. Her campaign has been bolstered by the backing of former Representative Susan Wild, who previously held the seat. The support from these Latina leaders underscores her commitment to community representation and advocacy.

In a statement, Rep. Escobar highlighted Obando-Derstine’s qualifications, saying, “Carol Obando-Derstine represents the best of our Latina leadership: hardworking, compassionate, and deeply rooted in her community.” She emphasized Obando-Derstine’s dedication to breaking barriers in the energy sector and her efforts to amplify the voices of hardworking families. Escobar expressed confidence that Obando-Derstine would bring that same relentless drive to Congress.

Prior to her time at PPL, Obando-Derstine served as a regional manager for former Democratic U.S. Senator Bob Casey. She has also held leadership positions in local nonprofits, including the SkillsUSA Council and the Children’s Coalition of the Lehigh Valley. Her diverse background positions her as a strong candidate in a competitive electoral landscape.

The 7th Congressional District of Pennsylvania is recognized as one of the most competitive districts in the nation, playing a crucial role in determining control of the House of Representatives. Currently, Republican Ryan Mackenzie, who was elected in 2024, is running unopposed in the Republican primary for a second term. Meanwhile, the Democratic primary features several challengers, including Obando-Derstine, Lamont G. McClure, former federal prosecutor Ryan Crosswell, former Bethlehem firefighter Bob Brooks, and Lehigh County Controller Mark Pinsley.

As the campaign progresses, the endorsements from established Latina leaders could prove pivotal for Obando-Derstine, helping her to connect with voters and amplify her message of community representation and dedicated service.
