Greg Abbott Backs Turning Point USA in Texas Schools Push
Gov. Greg Abbott has formally endorsed Turning Point USA, emphasizing the importance of establishing clubs affiliated with the organization in public schools across Texas. During a press conference at the Governor’s Mansion in Austin on March 4, 2024, Abbott warned that any school district obstructing the creation of these clubs would face investigations from the Texas Education Agency.
Abbott’s support for Turning Point USA aligns with the organization’s growing influence in Texas high schools, particularly following the death of its founder, Charlie Kirk. The governor addressed local school officials alongside Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Josh Thifault, senior director of Turning Point USA. He stated, “Let me be clear, any school that stands in the way of a Club America program in their school should be reported immediately to the Texas Education Agency, where I expect meaningful disciplinary action to be taking place for any stoppage of TPUSA in the great state of Texas.”
Turning Point USA aims to “identify, educate, train, and organize students to promote the principles of freedom, free markets, and limited government,” according to the group’s official website. Since Kirk’s passing, the organization has reportedly nearly tripled its presence in high schools, now reaching approximately 3,000 campuses.
At the announcement, Thifault expressed optimism about the future of the organization in Texas, stating, “To see what both of you are doing for us today, it gives me so much hope for the future of Texas.”
Attorney General Ken Paxton has actively participated in Turning Point chapters at several universities, including the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Houston, and the University of North Texas. While no school districts have been reported for blocking these chapters thus far, Mike Morath, Texas Education Commissioner, confirmed that investigations would proceed if any instances were reported.
Abbott’s endorsement comes as the organization continues to navigate the challenges of a shifting political landscape. Turning Point USA’s mission and Abbott’s commitment suggest a significant push to embed conservative values within Texas education.
As the governor and other officials rally support for this initiative, the implications for public education and student engagement in political discourse remain to be seen. The endorsement has sparked discussions on the role of such organizations in shaping educational environments and the broader political climate in Texas.
