Israel’s President Herzog Honors Victims of Bondi Beach Attack
Israel’s President Isaac Herzog began a state visit to Australia on December 14, 2023, aimed at offering support to the Jewish community following a tragic antisemitic attack in Sydney. Herzog visited Bondi Beach, the site of the massacre that claimed 15 lives, where he laid a wreath and stones as a tribute to the victims. This visit was marked by emotional meetings with families affected by the attack, which occurred during a Jewish festival.
The violence at Bondi Beach is recorded as Australia’s worst mass shooting in nearly three decades. The lone surviving gunman, Naveed Akram, faces charges including committing a terrorist act, murder, and causing injuries to over 40 individuals. Herzog’s tribute took place at the Bondi Pavilion, which had turned into an impromptu memorial with flowers and messages left by the public in the days following the tragedy.
In his remarks, Herzog expressed deep solidarity with the victims, stating, “We were shaken to our core when we first heard about the Bondi Beach attack… I’m here to express solidarity, friendship, and love.” He emphasized the need for stronger relations between Israel and Australia, highlighting their shared democratic values in the face of global challenges.
Security measures were stringent during Herzog’s visit, with police snipers positioned on rooftops to ensure safety. His itinerary includes stops in Melbourne and Canberra, concluding on Thursday. Notably, Sydney and Melbourne host approximately 85% of Australia’s Jewish population, making Herzog’s visit particularly significant.
The visit coincides with protests planned in response to Israel’s military actions in Gaza and its treatment of civilians in the region. Despite potential disruptions, mainstream Jewish organizations have welcomed Herzog’s visit as a crucial step in addressing the community’s concerns.
Legislative actions have followed the Bondi attack. The Australian Parliament recently expedited a bill that reduces the threshold for banning hate speech groups and announced a royal commission to investigate antisemitism, prompted by the attack. Herzog acknowledged these efforts, stating, “I’ve seen this wave surge all over the world… including Canada, Great Britain, the United States, and Australia.”
He also addressed the frustrations felt by families of the victims regarding the perceived inadequacies in preventing such attacks. “These frustrations were shared by many… including myself,” Herzog remarked, underlining the global rise in antisemitism.
In response to the attack being classified as terrorism, the New South Wales state parliament passed legislation enhancing police powers to manage protests effectively. This includes the authority to restrict protests for up to 90 days following a declared terrorist act, a measure aimed at maintaining public order during sensitive events like Herzog’s visit.
On the day of his visit, Herzog faced protests organized by the Palestine Action Group, which aimed to challenge the legitimacy of Israel’s existence. Acknowledging the protests, Herzog described them as part of broader attempts to “undermine and delegitimize” Israel.
As Herzog concludes his visit, the focus remains on both the commemoration of the victims and the ongoing discourse around antisemitism and the complexities of international relations. His visit not only aims to console grieving families but also seeks to reinforce the bonds between Australia and Israel during a time of heightened tension and insecurity.
