Lisa Demuth Targets Medicaid Fraud During Gubernatorial Campaign

As the Minnesota gubernatorial race intensifies, House Speaker Lisa Demuth is prioritizing the issue of fraud, particularly within the state’s Medicaid program. During a visit to the D-S Beverages facility in Moorhead on February 2, 2024, Demuth engaged with local business and community leaders, emphasizing her campaign’s focus on financial integrity and accountability.

Demuth, a Republican from Cold Spring, highlighted estimates from the U.S. Attorney’s Office indicating that Medicaid fraud in Minnesota could potentially reach a staggering $9 billion. While state officials have not confirmed this figure, Demuth believes it underscores a critical issue that needs addressing. “Clearly it’s not at the top of the news cycle right now, but to know that we’ve lost almost $9 billion, potentially, in fraud, and programs haven’t changed, is a focus of everything,” she stated.

Legislative Plans and Community Engagement

The Minnesota Legislature is set to convene on February 17, 2024, and Demuth anticipates the introduction of a bill aimed at establishing an Office of Inspector General. This proposal previously passed the Senate but failed to gain traction in the House of Representatives during the last session. Should she win the governorship, Demuth has indicated that her running mate, Ryan Wilson, would spearhead efforts to combat fraud in the state.

When questioned about the impact of immigration enforcement on her campaign, Demuth reiterated her commitment to addressing fraud as a pressing concern for Minnesotans. “They want to be able to afford their lives, have safe communities and move forward,” she remarked. “So as far as how things are affecting my run for governor, I’m bringing that common sense that has been lacking here in the state of Minnesota.”

Demuth also commented on the need for cooperation between state and federal governments regarding immigration laws. Following a recent conversation between President Donald Trump and Governor Tim Walz, local law enforcement arrested protesters outside a hotel in Maple Grove, which Demuth suggested was a positive sign of collaboration.

Campaign Tour and Outreach

On February 3, 2024, Demuth and Wilson planned to visit eight cities as part of their campaign tour, which included stops in St. Paul, Rochester, Mankato, Crookston, Bemidji, New Ulm, and Worthington. With the precinct caucuses approaching, she emphasized the importance of understanding the diverse needs of various regions within Minnesota. “We have to make sure, and I have insisted, that I would understand our state and what matters to each area better,” Demuth asserted.
