As demonstrators attempted to obstruct a vehicle from proceeding down the street, an officer deployed what appeared to be pepper spray, affecting both a protester and another officer nearby. The affected officer was later seen seeking assistance from his peers, visibly uncomfortable from the spray.

City Councilmember Shahana Hanif expressed concern over what she described as violations of city laws regarding local agencies’ cooperation with ICE. “So while it is illegal, largely illegal, for city agencies to aid ICE, we are seeing week-after-week incidents that show that our city is violating its own laws and that is wrong,” Hanif stated.

Activists voiced their frustrations regarding the perceived collaboration between the NYPD and ICE. Jay Walker, a representative from the group Rise and Resist, characterized the situation as a troubling alliance. “What I saw was the NYPD behaving like handmaidens to these ICE terrorists,” Walker remarked. Public Advocate Jumaane Williams added, “This is New York City, a city of immigrants. We are a shining big integrated apple, and we love it.”

As tensions heightened, protesters confronted law enforcement and individuals believed to be from the Department of Homeland Security. Reports indicated that some protesters were injured during the clashes. Amanda Holden, a participant in the demonstration, noted, “There were protesters that had been pepper-sprayed, sprayed with something else that looked kind of like it was orange, and then there were protesters that had bloody faces.”
