Preston Chong Sworn in as Kauai’s New Deputy Parks Director

LIHUE — The County of Kauai welcomed a new leader in its parks system on Monday as Preston Chong was officially sworn in as the new Deputy Parks Director. The ceremony took place at Vidinha Stadium, where Chong joined Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami to test the soon-to-be-completed running track.

Chong’s appointment comes after a distinguished tenure with the Kauai Department of Parks and Recreation, where he has served since January 2020. Before taking on the deputy role, he worked as the parks fiscal officer, managing a range of responsibilities including budgeting, personnel matters, and contract administration. His experience has positioned him well for the challenges ahead.

In a statement, Mayor Kawakami expressed confidence in Chong’s capabilities, stating, “Preston brings strong financial expertise, institutional knowledge, and steady leadership to this role.” He emphasized Chong’s understanding of both operational and fiscal responsibilities, which are crucial in overseeing the county’s parks and recreational facilities.

Joining the mayor in the ceremony was Eddie Topenio, who officiated the swearing-in, and Patrick Porter, the Parks Director. They acknowledged the significance of Chong’s appointment, especially with less than a year remaining in Kawakami’s administration. “We’re going to finish strong,” said Reiko Matsuyama, Managing Director of Kauai.

Chong expressed gratitude for the support of his family, including his wife Kristin and their newborn son Iokepa. “I am honored to continue serving the people of Kauai in this new capacity,” he stated. “Our parks and recreation programs are vital community resources, and I look forward to working alongside our dedicated staff to strengthen these services for residents and visitors alike.”

As Deputy Parks Director, Chong will oversee vital operations within the department. His responsibilities will include fiscal management, administrative coordination, park maintenance support, recreational programming, and long-term planning. This role is pivotal in ensuring that Kauai’s parks and facilities remain safe, accessible, and well-maintained for community use.

Chong is a graduate of Waimea High School and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Accounting from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His educational background, combined with his professional experience, equips him for the leadership challenges ahead.
