Protests Erupt Over Detention of Child, Father by ICE
A significant protest took place on January 20, 2024, outside the Minneapolis – Saint Paul International Airport, as demonstrators rallied against the detention of five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias. Workers and faith leaders gathered to voice their outrage over the circumstances surrounding the child’s apprehension, which many are describing as an act of injustice.
According to school officials, Liam was allegedly used as “bait” when he returned home from school in Columbia Heights. Agents reportedly approached him at his residence, instructing him to knock on the door to determine if anyone else was present. Upon entering the home, the agents took both Liam and his father into custody. They are now being held approximately 1,300 miles away at the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas.
This facility has faced criticism for its treatment of detainees. Reports indicate that conditions there include moldy and worm-infested food, unclean water, and constant lighting throughout the night, raising serious concerns about the well-being of those housed there. Activist and artist Margaret Vail Palmquist has been vocal about these issues, using her art to encourage deeper public engagement and analysis of immigration policies, particularly highlighting what she describes as the “wanton violence” of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The protest featured a large picket line, exemplifying the community’s solidarity and commitment to advocating for the rights of individuals facing detention. Faith leaders participated in acts of civil disobedience, expressing their discontent with the current immigration enforcement practices. Many participants emphasized the emotional and psychological toll that such actions have on families, particularly young children like Liam.
As protests continue to unfold, the focus remains on raising awareness about the treatment of detainees and the broader implications of immigration enforcement actions. Activists and community members are calling for reforms to ensure that the rights and basic needs of individuals and families are adequately protected.
The situation has sparked a national conversation about the role of ICE and the ethical considerations surrounding child detentions. Advocates are urging lawmakers to take immediate action to address these concerns and to reassess the policies that allow for such practices.
The movement surrounding these events highlights a growing dissatisfaction with how immigration policies are implemented, particularly the impact they have on vulnerable populations. As the protests gain momentum, the hope is to foster a sense of urgency among policymakers and the public to bring about meaningful change in the immigration system.
