Ukrainian Americans Rally Against Controversial Peace Plan
Demonstrators gathered on November 23, 2025, outside the Ukrainian American Citizens’ Association in North Philadelphia to voice their opposition to a proposed peace plan aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The plan, developed by Washington and Moscow, has faced significant criticism from the Ukrainian community for allegedly conceding to Russia’s demands, which include territorial cessions and military reductions.
The emergency rally drew numerous attendees waving Ukrainian flags and holding signs that proclaimed, “Appeasement Isn’t Peace.” Protesters expressed their discontent with the 28-point proposal, characterizing it as a “copy-and-paste” of Russia’s initial demands. Many participants emphasized that the plan contradicts the core principles of Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
Ulana Mazurkevich, president of the Ukrainian American Citizens’ Association, articulated the community’s sentiments, stating, “Nobody in their right mind would ask a country to give up its territory, its military, its freedoms.” The rally underscored the belief that the proposed terms may force Ukraine to sacrifice its sovereignty in exchange for the prospect of American support.
Co-organizer Mary Kalyna echoed these concerns, lamenting the pain felt by Ukrainians. She remarked, “We will rebuild but it won’t be the same, and I just feel such pain and anger at how much they have taken from us over and over and over again.” Kalyna highlighted the human cost of territorial concessions, noting, “It’s not just dirt, there are people there.”
Protesters also raised alarms about the plan’s implications for accountability regarding Russian war crimes. Eugene Luciw, a Ukrainian American at the rally, criticized the proposal for potentially allowing Russian officials and soldiers to escape prosecution for their actions during the conflict. He described the notion of forgiving “the rapists, the murderers, the genocidal maniacs” as fundamentally unjust.
While the proposal promises international security guarantees and reconstruction assistance for Kyiv, many argue that it disproportionately benefits Russia. Analysts believe that the plan would significantly weaken Ukraine, which has been severely affected by nearly four years of warfare. The Ukrainian government has publicly stated that it was not involved in the drafting of the peace plan, further fueling concerns about external influences on Ukraine’s future.
The rally in North Philadelphia is part of a broader response from Ukrainian communities across the United States and beyond. As discussions continue regarding the resolution of the conflict, many Ukrainians and Ukrainian Americans remain steadfast in their commitment to resist any agreements that compromise Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity.
