Archaeologists have made a significant discovery at the Xigou site near the Danjiangkou Reservoir in central China, uncovering stone tools that date back approximately 160,000 to 72,000 years ago. The research, published in Nature Communications, reveals that some artifacts were once hafted, meaning they were attached to handles, suggesting a level of planning and technical proficiency not previously attributed to early hominins in this area. Expedition leader Shixia Yang noted that this finding contradicts the long-standing belief that East Asian hominins relied on simpler stone-tool traditions compared to their counterparts in Africa and western Europe.

At the Xigou site, researchers recovered over 2,600 artifacts, including small flakes and retouched tools. These findings provide insight into the variety of stone-reduction strategies employed by toolmakers, which included expedient flaking and sophisticated core-on-flake techniques.
