Catherine “Cathy” Shea McCurdy, a beloved community figure in Hermosa Beach, California, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 3, 2025, at the age of 74. Her death was attributed to complications from diabetes, a condition she had battled for many years.

Born in Queens, New York, to Raymond and Erma “Susie” Shea, Cathy spent her formative years in Hermosa Beach. She graduated from Redondo Union High School in 1969. In 1978, she married Richard H. “Dick” McCurdy, and together they became known for their dedication to the local community, particularly through their work in the glass business at Shea Company.

Throughout her life, Cathy demonstrated a profound commitment to community service. She served on the Hermosa Beach School Board for many years and was instrumental in the establishment of the Kiwanis Builders Club at Hermosa Valley School. Her efforts extended to the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation and the Sister City Association, reflecting her passion for education and community development.

Cathy’s impact was further felt during her nearly decade-long tenure as the Hermosa Beach representative to the LA County Beach Commission. Her leadership and dedication to public service earned her the title of “Hermosa Beach Woman of the Year” in 1998, a testament to her significant contributions to the community.

In addition to her formal roles, both Cathy and Dick actively participated in the Kiwanis Club of Hermosa Beach, where they held various positions, including President. Their involvement in the club exemplified their commitment to service and volunteerism, which resonated deeply within the local community.

Cathy’s funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on February 21, 2026, at St. Cross Episcopal Church, located at 1818 Monterey Blvd., Hermosa Beach. Following the service, a celebration of her life will be held at Kiwanis Hall, 2515 Valley Dr., Hermosa Beach. Community members and friends are invited to attend and pay their respects to a woman who made a lasting impact on the lives of many.

As the community comes together to honor Cathy McCurdy, her legacy of service, leadership, and compassion will continue to inspire generations to come.
