Esteemed Biologist David Ellis Brest Passes Away at 85

David Ellis Brest, a respected biologist and educator, passed away peacefully at the age of 85, with his beloved wife, Patricia Brest, at his side. A lifelong resident of Southern California, David was born in San Gabriel as the youngest of three boys. His early years were marked by a deep appreciation for nature, fostered during family camping trips and outdoor adventures with his twin brother, Dennis Brest.

David pursued his passion for the natural world by studying Forestry at the University of Oregon, later earning a PhD in Biology from UCLA. This academic journey sparked a friendly rivalry with Dennis, who remained loyal to USC. For 35 years, David dedicated his career to teaching in the Biology Department at California State University, Dominguez Hills, retiring fully in 2003. Notably, during family gatherings, his famous lecture on photosynthesis often emerged as both punishment and reward, showcasing his playful spirit.

Legacy and Family Life

David met Patricia while both were at CSUDH, where his humor and intellect quickly charmed her. They married in June 1987, forming a partnership grounded in love and support. David was a devoted family man, deeply committed to his loved ones, both two-legged and four-legged. His calm demeanor and patience in navigating life’s challenges provided a reassuring presence to family and friends alike.

He leaves behind cherished memories of family camping trips to Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Pismo Beach, and Sequoia National Park. His ashes will be scattered in a sequoia grove beside the meadow where he and Patricia exchanged vows, a touching tribute to their life together.

David is survived by his wife, Patricia, along with stepchildren Gayle Heifetz, Shelley Merrill, and Fred (Cris) Pabst; grandchildren Kai and Alex Heifetz, Allie and Connor Merrill, and Casey and Jay Pabst. He is also remembered by niece and nephews, Carol (James) Brest Hare, Brian (Lonni) Brest, Art (Donna) Brest, Mike (Cathy) Brest, Matthew Brest, and his sisters-in-law, Nan and Bridgetta Brest.
