GigaBite Robotics Launches Fundraiser to Expand STEM Programs
GigaBite Robotics, a community-based robotics team comprised of 11 middle and high school students from South Lake Tahoe, is seeking donations to enhance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) opportunities for local youth. The team, known as FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Team 20681, aims to continue its mission of providing hands-on experiences in robotics and engineering to students in the area.
This year, GigaBite Robotics has significantly impacted the community by mentoring a rookie FIRST Lego League (FLL) team that received the Rising Stars Award and competed at the Northern Nevada Championship. The team has also organized STEM camps, workshops, and community events, introducing numerous children to the exciting fields of robotics, engineering, and coding.
Enhancing Learning through Robotics
Now in its fifth year of competing in the FIRST Tech Challenge, GigaBite Robotics utilizes robotics as a tool to impart real-world engineering principles, teamwork, and problem-solving skills through a philosophy known as Gracious Professionalism. This season’s challenge, titled Decode, has pushed the team to implement data-driven design, develop custom CAD-built mechanisms, and ensure the seamless integration of software and hardware.
The team’s influence extends beyond the competition arena. They have participated in mentoring younger teams, volunteered at both FTC and FLL competitions, and hosted a local scrimmage. Collaborations with local schools and Lake Tahoe Community College have led to the establishment of events like STEM Discovery Night, further promoting STEM education. Over the past three summers, GigaBite Robotics has taught more than 500 students through hands-on STEM camps and outreach programs.
Support for Future Innovators
To sustain and expand its programs, GigaBite Robotics is calling for community support through donations. Contributions will directly fund essential resources such as robot parts, 3D filament, registration and competition fees, tools, travel, and outreach initiatives. The team emphasizes that financial contributions will help ensure that the cost does not become a barrier for students eager to explore STEM fields.
