49ers Release Brandon Aiyuk, Consider Gus Bradley for DC Role

The San Francisco 49ers have officially announced the release of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, marking the end of his tenure with the team. General manager John Lynch stated during a press conference on January 3, 2024, that Aiyuk’s uncertain status had become untenable. “It’s safe to say he’s played his last snap with the Niners. It’s unfortunate, a situation that went awry,” Lynch remarked alongside head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Aiyuk’s challenges began with a knee injury sustained in the 2024 season, which hindered his recovery and adherence to the 49ers’ rehabilitation guidelines. Despite initial signs of progress, his failure to comply with the recovery plan led the team to void $27 million in guarantees for 2026. Aiyuk was previously placed on the reserve/left squad list, a move that underscored his disconnect from the team.

Throughout training camp and the preseason, Aiyuk remained present during warmups but went silent in September. Lynch expressed frustration over the lack of communication, stating, “I wish I knew (why). Can’t help you.” Shanahan echoed these sentiments, explaining that his attempts to reach Aiyuk were met with silence. “Eventually there was not much of an explanation, so it’s hard for us to understand,” he said. “It’s unfortunate, and it’s confusing for all of us.”

Potential Changes in Coaching Staff

As the 49ers move forward, they are also contemplating changes within their coaching staff. Shanahan confirmed that Gus Bradley, the assistant head coach of defense, is a strong candidate to step into the role of defensive coordinator following the departure of Robert Saleh, who is set to take over as head coach of the Tennessee Titans. Shanahan noted, “I’m going to say it’s a wide net but Gus is the obvious one to everybody, and us too.”

The 49ers are currently navigating the complexities of this transition and expect Saleh to potentially recruit some of their existing coaches. Shanahan expressed a desire for a timely resolution, stating, “I would love to go on vacation and not make my family wait.” He also conveyed his happiness for Saleh, emphasizing that he deserves the opportunity.

This marks another significant shift for Shanahan, who has now seen five different defensive coordinators in as many seasons. As the 49ers prepare for the upcoming season, the focus will be on rebuilding and addressing the challenges that arose during the previous year.
