Anthony Davis to Undergo Surgery, Mavs Prepare for Future Moves
Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis is set to undergo surgery for ligament damage in his left hand, which is expected to sideline him for several months. This news, reported by ESPN, indicates that Davis’ season with Dallas has effectively come to an end, as the team currently holds a record of 15-25 and sits in 12th place in the Western Conference.
The Mavericks are preparing for the upcoming NBA draft in June 2024, which marks the last opportunity for the team to control their first-round pick until 2031. This situation has prompted the Mavericks to reassess their strategy, particularly in light of Davis’ injury. Since the severity of the injury was disclosed on Friday, the team has resumed trade discussions regarding the ten-time All-Star, with several franchises reportedly expressing interest.
Davis sustained the injury during a defensive play against Lauri Markkanen late in a recent loss to the Utah Jazz. In that game, he recorded 21 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and one block in 35 minutes of play. This season has been challenging for Davis, who has been limited to just 29 regular season games since joining the Mavericks from Los Angeles in a trade that involved Luka Doncic in early February.
The Mavericks’ performance has been noticeably impacted by Davis’ presence. The team has managed a record of 10-10 with him on the court, but their struggles are evident in the 5-15 record when he is absent. Throughout this season, Davis has averaged 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.7 blocks across 20 games.
As Dallas looks to the future, they are prioritizing the long-term development of players such as rookie sensation Cooper Flagg. The potential trade of Davis to a playoff contender—teams like the Toronto Raptors and Atlanta Hawks have shown interest—could afford him the chance to return for the postseason, while allowing the Mavericks to focus on rebuilding for the coming years. This transition could provide a multiyear window for Davis’ next team, potentially at a reduced trade cost.
With the Mavericks’ current trajectory and Davis’ health concerns, the franchise faces critical decisions in the coming months that could shape their future in the NBA.
