The Arizona Wildcats have strengthened their defensive lineup by securing a commitment from former Northern Colorado safety Cam Chapa. This announcement, made on Saturday, follows the recent addition of Malcolm Hartzog Jr., another safety who previously played at Nebraska. Chapa’s decision to join Arizona highlights the team’s proactive approach to replenishing its secondary following the departure of all five starters.

Chapa, standing at 6 feet 1 inch and weighing 193 pounds, brings significant experience with him to the Wildcats, having started all 23 games he played during his tenure at Northern Colorado. His impressive college career includes a total of 171 tackles and eight interceptions. Notably, in the 2025 season, he led the Big Sky Conference with 63 solo tackles, showcasing his capability as a key defensive player.

In matchups against FBS opponents, Chapa demonstrated his skills effectively. In two games against Colorado State, he recorded 18 total tackles and allowed only one completed pass for a mere one yard. Such statistics underline his potential to make an immediate impact in Arizona’s challenging schedule.

Arizona’s coaching staff is actively seeking to bolster its defensive backfield, with Chapa becoming the third defensive back added from the NCAA transfer portal this offseason. The Wildcats have already acquired a total of five defensive transfers as part of a broader strategy that involves 11 total portal additions. This influx of talent is crucial for Arizona, which is in a period of transition and must fill significant gaps in its roster.

As the season approaches, the Wildcats aim to integrate Chapa and his fellow transfers effectively into their system. With Chapa’s proven track record and the Wildcats’ urgent need for depth in their secondary, fans are hopeful that these additions will lead to a stronger performance in the upcoming season.
