Cabrillo College Appoints Anthony Romero as Interim Head Coach
The Cabrillo College Athletic Department announced on February 23, 2026, that Anthony Romero will serve as the interim head football coach for the upcoming fall season. This appointment follows the formal leave of absence taken by head coach Justin Hansen due to family medical reasons.
In a press release, Cabrillo’s Director of Athletics Mark Ramsey expressed confidence in Romero’s capabilities, stating that he possesses an “intimate understanding of the requirements of a premier community college program.” Ramsey noted Romero’s “incredible amount of energy and motivation” will be vital during Hansen’s absence. Romero has been a key member of the coaching staff for the past four years, working closely with Hansen.
Romero’s coaching journey began in 2017 at Alvarez High School, and he has also held the position of run game coordinator and offensive line coach at Hartnell College. Reflecting on his readiness for this new challenge, Romero said, “I feel like I’m more than ready… my experiences have helped me a lot. I’m pretty ready to take this on and help Cabrillo in this time of transition.”
As Cabrillo prepares for spring training, Romero acknowledges the potential challenges ahead but emphasizes the team’s high confidence. “Our focus is on getting players ready to perform at their best, whether that’s on the field or academically,” he added.
Coaching Staff Adjustments
In conjunction with Romero’s promotion, Ismanjah (Smo) Soekardi has been elevated to assistant head football coach. With over 20 years on Cabrillo’s coaching staff, Soekardi’s longstanding ties to the local high school community are seen as an asset for recruitment and outreach efforts. Ramsey highlighted Soekardi’s unmatched passion for the program, reinforcing his value in maintaining community relationships.
The coaching staff will also see expanded roles for offensive coaches Steve Warren and Travis Rebbert, while Ray Myers and Derek Cahill will provide a dependable presence on defense. Volunteer assistant coach John Stow is expected to continue his support from the sidelines.
Ramsey underscored the coaching team’s commitment to ensuring that student-athletes excel both on the field and in their academic pursuits. “Their collective focus remains steadfast: ensuring student-athletes excel on the field, achieve successful matriculation to four-year universities, and develop the lifelong skills necessary for their future careers,” he stated.
Goals for the Future
As the interim head coach, Romero aims to instill a culture of winning and personal growth among the players. He stated, “Just keeping the culture of winning football, and building great young men, that’s what it’s all about at the end of the day at this level.”
With the upcoming season on the horizon, Cabrillo College’s athletic community is optimistic about the leadership of Romero and his team. The focus remains on fostering a positive environment that supports both athletic excellence and academic success for all student-athletes.
