Caleb Downs Wins Jim Thorpe Award, Ohio State Eyes Playoff Glory
Ohio State’s safety Caleb Downs has been awarded the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award, recognizing him as the top defensive back in the United States. The announcement came shortly after the Buckeyes faced a disappointing defeat against Indiana in the Big Ten title game. Downs triumphed over notable competitors, including Mansoor Delane from LSU and Leonard Moore from Notre Dame.
Over the course of the season, Downs has demonstrated impressive statistics, recording 60 tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack, and two interceptions across 13 games. This accolade marks a significant achievement for the Buckeyes, as Downs is the first Ohio State defensive back to receive the award since Malcolm Jenkins in 2008. Antoine Winfield Sr. was the inaugural winner for Ohio State in 1998, contributing to the program’s legacy of producing top-tier defensive talent.
From Alabama to Ohio State
Downs’ journey in college football began at Alabama, where he made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2023. Earning a starting position under former head coach Nick Saban, he stood out in a program known for its rigorous selection of defensive backs. After Saban’s retirement, Downs transferred to Ohio State in the winter of 2024, quickly becoming a key player.
In his first season with the Buckeyes, Downs played a crucial role in guiding the team to victory in the national championship. Now, as Ohio State prepares for the College Football Playoffs, they have secured the No. 2 seed and are poised to face the winner of the Miami versus Texas A&M matchup. For the Buckeyes to reclaim their championship status, Downs will need to deliver a stellar performance against formidable offensive opponents.
Looking Ahead to the NFL Draft
As he approaches the end of his college career, Downs is expected to declare for the 2026 NFL Draft. His performance in the upcoming playoff games could significantly influence his draft stock, with several NFL teams eager to secure his talents. While the safety position is often viewed as less critical than others, Downs’ skills and versatility have drawn considerable attention.
As the playoffs approach, the spotlight remains firmly on Caleb Downs, whose achievements have not only elevated his personal status but also brought recognition to the Ohio State program. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how he will perform in the crucial weeks ahead, as the Buckeyes aim to solidify their legacy in college football.
