Central-Phenix City and Moody Claim State Titles in Flag Football Showdown

The 2025 AL.com Flag Football Poll has been updated following the conclusion of the state playoff finals, where the top two teams in each class faced off in decisive championship matches. The Super 7 championships, held at Birmingham’s Progressive Field, showcased the dominance of the number one ranked teams, both of which secured state titles.

In the Class 6A/7A championship, Central-Phenix City continued its impressive legacy by defeating Vestavia Hills with a commanding score of 46-7. This victory marked Central’s third consecutive state championship and capped an unbeaten season at 20-0. The win also ended Vestavia’s impressive 27-game unbeaten streak. Central-Phenix City’s success has elevated them to second place in the latest MaxPreps national rankings and third in the USA Today Top 25, which has yet to release its final poll.

Meanwhile, in the Class 1A/5A championship, Moody avenged their previous year’s defeat by overcoming Montgomery Catholic 27-18. This victory not only secured Moody’s first state title but also concluded their season with a record of 22-3. Montgomery Catholic finished the season at 21-5 and was ranked 23rd in the USA Today poll.

Significant Rankings Shifts in Final Polls

The final polls saw notable changes, particularly in the large-school division. The playoff semifinalist Smiths Station surged to the third spot in the rankings despite being unranked in the final regular-season poll. Homewood, which faced a loss to Vestavia Hills in the quarterfinals, claimed the 10th position in the rankings. Overall, seven of the teams in the final Top 10 advanced to at least the playoff quarterfinals.

In contrast, while there was significant movement in the rankings following the top two teams in the Class 1A/5A poll, no new teams entered the list. Notably, seven quarterfinalists were also included in the small-school Top 10.

The performance of Central-Phenix City and Moody not only reflects their skill on the field but also highlights the growing competitive landscape of flag football in Alabama. As teams prepare for the next season, the results from this year’s championships will undoubtedly influence strategies and player development moving forward.
