Eagles Consider Tanner McKee Trade Amid Quarterback Market Shift
The Philadelphia Eagles are weighing the possibility of trading backup quarterback Tanner McKee as the NFL prepares for a dynamic offseason. Executive Vice President of Football Operations Howie Roseman addressed this topic during a recent media session before attending the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. While most attention focused on wide receiver A.J. Brown, who is subject to trade speculation, Roseman offered limited comments regarding McKee’s future with the team.
When asked about McKee, who is entering the final two seasons of his contract, Roseman cited the importance of the backup quarterback role but remained noncommittal. “I have a lot of confidence in the player,” he stated, emphasizing the value of having a solid backup in a league where starting-caliber quarterbacks are increasingly scarce. His cautious approach leaves fans and analysts questioning whether McKee could become a trade asset.
McKee’s performance has raised eyebrows since he joined the NFL as a sixth-round pick from Stanford. In his rookie season, he stepped in during Week 17 against the Dallas Cowboys, completing 3 of 4 passes for 54 yards and throwing two touchdowns. The following week, he showcased his potential with a 66% completion rate, amassing 269 yards and two touchdowns in a season finale against the New York Giants. Although his recent performance was less impressive, the two-year trajectory indicates he possesses a strong arm and potential.
The Eagles currently have no other quarterbacks under contract besides Jalen Hurts and McKee. Trading McKee could leave the team vulnerable, necessitating an investment in free agency to secure a veteran backup for Hurts in 2026. Roseman must weigh the potential return against the risk of losing a reliable option behind Hurts.
To assess McKee’s trade value, it is essential to examine the current quarterback landscape. Several teams are actively seeking stability at the quarterback position, including the Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and Cleveland Browns. These franchises have expressed uncertainty regarding their starting quarterbacks, creating a potential market for McKee.
The Dolphins have recently stated that “everything is on the table” regarding their quarterback situation, including Tua Tagovailoa. Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts have reportedly granted backup Anthony Richardson permission to seek a trade after a lackluster performance. The uncertain futures of quarterbacks like Kirk Cousins and Daniel Jones further complicate the scenario, as they may also be on the move or available in free agency.
The free-agent quarterback market is rife with aging players and those with uncertain potential. The list includes Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and Jimmy Garoppolo, among others. With few pro-ready quarterbacks expected to enter the draft, McKee could emerge as an appealing option for teams looking to strengthen their roster without incurring significant costs.
As teams like the Jets consider their draft strategy, they may find McKee a more attractive option than investing heavily in a free agent. The combination of a lack of available talent in both the draft and free agency may enhance McKee’s trade prospects.
Ultimately, the decision lies with Roseman, who has indicated he is open to exploring offers. While he affirmed the team’s confidence in McKee, he also acknowledged the importance of considering all options. The evolving quarterback market and McKee’s budding talent could lead to a significant offseason decision for the Eagles, shaping both their immediate future and long-term strategy.
