Experience Thrilling Skijoring Events Across Colorado This Winter
Winter in Colorado offers exciting opportunities to experience skijoring, an exhilarating sport where skiers are towed by horses through snowy landscapes. From January 10 to January 25, 2024, the 120th annual event will take place, showcasing thrilling competitions in picturesque towns such as Leadville and Steamboat Springs. Participants can expect high-energy shows featuring not only horses but also other livestock, creating a lively atmosphere for spectators and competitors alike.
The San Juan Skijoring event at the Ouray County Fairgrounds promises an engaging experience beyond the races. Attendees can enjoy live music, local food options, and interactive exhibitions. The competition includes various obstacles, such as vertical boxes and rails, culminating in an impressive gap jump over a Toyota Tacoma. This family-friendly event invites rookies to join in by skijoring with their dogs, offering a unique twist to the traditional sport.
Notably, Estes Park will revive its skiing legacy with a skijoring event this winter, following the closure of the Hidden Valley ski area over thirty years ago. Competitors and spectators can enjoy the festivities from a warming hut, where they can catch all the action on a big screen. The event will also feature activities for children, vendor booths, and a variety of food trucks offering hearty fare.
One of Colorado’s most celebrated winter traditions is the Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival, known as the oldest winter carnival west of the Mississippi. This year’s festivities include ski jump exhibitions, a parade with the only skiing high school band in the country, and a spectacular drone show. Visitors on closing day can witness children participating in equestrian skijoring, highlighting the community’s unique blend of skiing and equine culture.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, consider a trip to Silverton for a thrilling skijoring event taking place over the weekend of February 14-15, 2024. Spectators can watch daring cowboys and skiers race down the infamous Blair Street, drawing thousands of attendees to this small town. With the annual Skis and Saddles skijoring event in nearby Pagosa Springs canceled due to a lack of snow, Silverton anticipates a larger turnout this year.
Leadville, a town with a rich history in skijoring dating back to 1949, will host its annual competitions on March 7 and 8, 2024. Competitors will race through the historic downtown, with events starting at noon each day. Fans can bid on their favorite teams and watch as they navigate obstacles, aiming to score points by spearing rings and completing jumps. This event is often referred to as the “granddaddy of them all,” solidifying its place in the hearts of skijoring enthusiasts.
For those looking to enjoy the outdoors with their pets, the Breckenridge Nordic Center allows dogs on fifteen miles of groomed trails, specifically on the Peak Seven trails above Ski Hill Road. Visitors can rent skijoring gear and purchase day passes to explore the trails that are otherwise not rated as easy. The center also offers guided instruction for those new to the sport.
The Grand Mesa Nordic Council supports a community-focused environment by grooming 31 miles of trails across three cross-country ski areas, making it a dog-friendly destination for skijoring.
For a complete winter getaway, consider visiting Snow Mountain Ranch, which boasts a variety of activities including tubing, ice skating, and snowmobiling. With the added benefit of a spacious Nordic center featuring 25 miles of pet-friendly trails, it is an ideal location to unwind after a day filled with adventure.
Colorado’s winter offerings, particularly skijoring events, promise excitement for both participants and spectators. Whether experiencing the adrenaline of the races or enjoying the festive atmosphere, there is something for everyone to enjoy this winter season.
