Matthew Stafford Returns Home to Family After NFC Championship Loss
Matthew Stafford returned home in the early hours of January 26, 2024, after the Los Angeles Rams’ heartbreaking loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship game. The game, which took place on January 25, marked a disappointing end to the Rams’ playoff hopes as they failed to secure a spot in the Super Bowl.
In a heartfelt display of family life, his wife, Kelly Stafford, shared videos from their Nest security camera on Instagram. The footage captures Matthew, 37, arriving home at approximately 2:30 a.m. Following a grueling game where he left everything on the field, he was simply a father returning to his daughters. “After leaving everything out on that field and coming up short, at 2:30 am, this was Matthew,” Kelly, 36, wrote in her Instagram Story.
As he walked into the rooms of their four daughters—twins Sawyer and Chandler, 8, Hunter, 7, and Tyler, 5—Matthew took a moment to kiss each of them goodnight. The emotional scene highlighted the balance Matthew maintains between his high-pressure career in the NFL and his dedication to family.
When the girls awoke, Kelly revealed a surprise for them: a box of donuts accompanied by a handwritten note from Matthew. “Thank you for being such rockstars for me all season long! Y’all were the inspiration for daddy’s incredible year! We ♥️ you!” the note read. This gesture underscored the close-knit family dynamic that the Staffords have cultivated, even amid the pressures of professional football.
Matthew’s performance during the season was noteworthy, despite the disappointment of the playoff loss. Over the course of his 17th NFL season, he achieved a career-high of 46 touchdowns, completing 65 percent of his passes while throwing only eight interceptions—his best record in three of the last four years.
Throughout the season, Kelly and the girls supported Matthew, often attending games in person. In December, Tyler gained attention online for her enthusiastic celebration of one of her father’s touchdowns, showcasing the family’s spirited involvement in his career.
The Staffords have been candid about their parenting journey, particularly in Kelly’s podcast, “The Morning After,” which is currently on hiatus. In a previous episode, Matthew spoke affectionately about his daughters, stating, “I have so many good, sweet moments with my girls. Being a parent, for me, is the least outward facing thing I can do.” He emphasized the joy he finds in focusing solely on his children, away from public scrutiny.
Reflecting on his upbringing, Matthew noted the pressure of expectations he faced from a young age. “I’ve known what it’s like to have expectations since I was 15 years old or so,” he explained. He expressed gratitude for a childhood where he could enjoy sports without the burden of living up to others’ expectations.
As the Rams look ahead to next season, Matthew Stafford’s commitment to family remains evident, balancing the demands of professional football with the joy of being a father. The Staffords continue to inspire fans with their dedication both on and off the field.
