NBA Cancels Atlanta Hawks’ Promotion Amid Controversy
The NBA has intervened to cancel the Atlanta Hawks’ planned “Magic Monday” promotion, which was set to coincide with the team’s game against the Orlando Magic on March 16, 2026. The event aimed to celebrate the city’s well-known Magic City strip club, famous for its lemon pepper wings. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced the cancellation following significant backlash regarding the promotion.
In a statement, Silver clarified the league’s response, saying, “When we became aware of the Atlanta Hawks’ scheduled promotion, we reached out to Hawks leadership to better understand their plans and rationale. While we appreciate the team’s perspective and their desire to move forward, we have heard significant concerns from a broad array of league stakeholders, including fans, partners, and employees.” He concluded that canceling the promotion was the appropriate decision for the broader NBA community.
The controversy surrounding the event intensified after Luke Kornet, a center for the San Antonio Spurs, published a blog post urging the Hawks to reconsider their plans. Kornet expressed that NBA players and officials should foster an environment that respects women. He wrote, “Allowing the night to continue without protest would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society.”
Kornet’s comments resonated with a significant portion of the league, as he noted that “others throughout the league” were surprised by the Hawks’ decision to promote the event. He emphasized the need for the NBA to provide a safe environment for fans of all ages and to celebrate community culture in a manner that aligns with these values. “The celebration of a strip club is not conduct aligned with that vision,” he stated.
The Atlanta Hawks had initially intended for the promotional night to be a highlight of their season, but the league’s decision to cancel it reflects the NBA’s commitment to maintaining a respectful and inclusive atmosphere. The situation underscores the ongoing discussions within sports about the appropriateness of certain promotions and their potential impact on public perception.
As the league continues to navigate these complex issues, it remains focused on ensuring that all fans can enjoy the game of basketball in a safe and welcoming environment. The decision to cancel the “Magic Monday” promotion serves as a reminder of the influence of community standards and the importance of aligning organizational values with public expectations.
