The North Rowan girls basketball team faced a challenging return to action on January 12, 2024, as they suffered a hard-fought 46-33 defeat against North Stanly. The game, held at North Rowan’s gym in Spencer, highlighted the impact of recent disruptions caused by storms, which limited the team’s practice time.

Despite their struggle at the free-throw line, where they missed 22 of 30 attempts, the Cavaliers managed to keep the game competitive. Head coach Jarvis Miller acknowledged the difficulties his team faced. “We just haven’t been in the gym much due to the storms, and we definitely had a tough night on free throws,” he stated. Miller emphasized the importance of the experience, noting, “It was tough to return from a layoff and play the first-place team in our league, but we did have a chance, and that was all I could really ask of the girls.”

The Cavaliers, with an overall record of 5-13 and 3-3 in the Yadkin Valley Conference, were led in scoring by Melanie Parker, who contributed nine points. Her teammate Kanya Cowan added seven points to the scoreboard. Other contributors included Robinson with five points, Oglesby with four, and Connor with three. The team’s performance demonstrated resilience, despite the setbacks they encountered during the match.

North Stanly, improving to 16-3 overall and maintaining an unbeaten 7-0 record in the conference, demonstrated their strength throughout the game. The Comets capitalized on North Rowan’s struggles, securing a solid victory that keeps them at the top of the league standings.

As the season progresses, North Rowan will look to build on their experiences and improve their performance in upcoming games. The team remains committed to overcoming challenges and enhancing their skills as they navigate through the rest of their season.
