Rory McIlroy Reflects on 2025 Season Ahead of Dubai Desert Classic
Rory McIlroy has made headlines with a surprising assessment of his performance during the 2025 golf season. The Northern Irish golfer, who recently triumphed in what he calls the best year of his career, shared his thoughts before the Dubai Desert Classic this week.
McIlroy, aged 36, achieved significant milestones last season, including completing the career Grand Slam. His victories included prestigious tournaments such as The Masters, The Players, the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and the Irish Open. He also played an essential role in Luke Donald’s European team, which secured a win against the United States at the Ryder Cup held in New York.
McIlroy’s Unexpected Statistical Findings
Despite his impressive achievements, McIlroy expressed a surprising viewpoint regarding his performance statistics. Upon reviewing his data from the past two years, he found that his play was statistically better in 2023 and 2024 than in 2025. He noted that while he experienced remarkable highs in 2025, his overall consistency was lacking compared to previous seasons.
“I went through a stats review maybe three or four weeks ago after Australia, and stats-wise, if you looked at my 2023 and 2024, they were better than my 2025, which is a good thing,” McIlroy stated.
He continued, acknowledging the balance between achieving high-level performance and maintaining steadiness week-to-week. “The highs in ’25 were incredibly high, and obviously that’s what made it the year that it was. But at the same time, there are certain things that I’d like to tidy up and get a little bit better at this year. But that’s constantly evolving.”
Focusing on Improvement Ahead of 2026
As he prepares for the upcoming season, McIlroy aims to refine his iron play, which he noted had declined towards the end of last year. His putting game, however, has reached new heights, consistently placing him among the top performers globally.
“I’ve turned myself into one of the best putters in the world, and my iron play maybe fell off at the back end of last year. It was very good for the first three or four months,” he explained.
McIlroy emphasized the importance of continuous improvement, stating that small adjustments can lead to significant outcomes. “So it’s just little things like that, and looking where you can maintain a high level and try to get a little bit better, and if you do that, this stuff usually takes care of itself. The wins will come, and getting into contention, and then it’s really about just handling your nerves and the situation at that point.”
As the golf community eagerly anticipates McIlroy’s performance at the Dubai Desert Classic, his reflections offer a glimpse into the mind of a champion striving for excellence. His commitment to improvement and self-reflection highlights the dedication that drives athletes to succeed at the highest level.
