Salamanca Celebrates Reopening of Bill Flanigan Memorial Ice Pond
The City of Salamanca, New York, is set to celebrate the grand re-opening of the Bill Flanigan Memorial Ice Pond on March 15, 2024, from 16:00 to 18:00. This event marks the installation of new synthetic ice, enhancing winter recreation opportunities for both residents and visitors.
The re-opening event is free and open to the public, offering attendees the chance to enjoy complimentary skating and skate rentals. Light refreshments will be available, along with the Salamanca City Central School District food truck, which will serve chili and cornbread. Additionally, door prizes will be awarded, with one boy and one girl aged 15 and under each receiving a gift certificate for a new pair of ice skates.
Community Impact and Future Plans
The event aims to create a family-friendly atmosphere, welcoming residents of all ages to participate. Mayor Sandra Magiera expressed pride in the collaborative effort that brought this project to fruition, stating, “We are incredibly proud of everyone who played a role in bringing this project to life. What began more than two years ago is a major step forward for our community, and we’re not finished yet.”
The transition to synthetic ice is a significant advancement, allowing for a longer and more reliable skating season, unaffected by unpredictable weather patterns. Mayor Magiera explained that this upgrade will eliminate previous delays and closures associated with natural ice. Following the re-opening, construction will commence on a new warming hut, with plans for a full grand opening celebration to be announced.
“This project is the result of hard work, patience, and collaboration, and we are grateful to everyone who helped make it happen,” the mayor added, hinting at more exciting developments in the near future.
