Timberwolves Defeat Clippers 94-88 Without Kawhi Leonard
The Minnesota Timberwolves secured a hard-fought 94-88 victory against the short-handed Los Angeles Clippers on February 8, 2024, in Inglewood, California. Anthony Edwards led the Timberwolves with an impressive 31 points, while Donte DiVincenzo contributed 18 points, helping the team extend their winning streak to five games since February 9.
The Clippers, missing key players including Kawhi Leonard due to an ankle injury and John Collins with head and neck issues, struggled throughout the match. Derrick Jones Jr. was the standout performer for Los Angeles, scoring 18 points, while Bennedict Mathurin added 14 points. The team has now lost three consecutive games, marking their first losing streak of this length since December 2023.
Tension escalated early in the second half when Jaden McDaniels was assessed a flagrant-1 foul on Mathurin, resulting in a brief altercation with Kris Dunn, who received a technical foul. Despite their offensive woes, the Clippers managed to hold a six-point lead in the third quarter and entered the final period with a 68-63 advantage.
The tide turned in favor of the Timberwolves when Edwards executed a reverse layup to give Minnesota the lead with 7 minutes and 40 seconds remaining. The Clippers narrowed the gap to 89-88 after Jones scored a layup. However, Edwards responded with a crucial three-pointer over two defenders, extending the lead to 92-88 with just under 43 seconds left in the game.
At halftime, the Timberwolves led 44-38, bolstered by DiVincenzo’s 12 points and Edwards’ 11. Minnesota’s defense was particularly effective, limiting Los Angeles to only 18.2% shooting in the second quarter, which resulted in the Clippers’ lowest-scoring first half of the season.
Injuries added to the Clippers’ woes, with Naz Reid leaving the court with an elbow injury late in the first half but returning for the third quarter.
This victory marks a promising start to the Timberwolves’ three-game road trip, which will conclude on Sunday against the Denver Nuggets. As the season progresses, both teams will look to address their injury concerns and regain momentum.
