Vanderbilt Women’s Basketball Triumphs Over Kentucky in Tight Match
No. 5 Vanderbilt University women’s basketball secured a thrilling victory against No. 16 Kentucky on March 3, 2024, winning 81-79 in a tightly contested game. This marked the second time this season that the Commodores triumphed over the Wildcats, showcasing their resilience during high-pressure moments.
With less than a minute remaining, Vanderbilt found itself trailing 79-78. Freshman Aubrey Galvan took control in the final seconds. Dribbling to her left, she executed a mid-range jumper that clinched the lead for Vanderbilt with just 7.2 seconds left on the clock. Despite a last-minute effort from Kentucky to reclaim the lead, a missed jump shot allowed Mikayla Blakes to secure the rebound and subsequently convert a free throw, sealing the victory.
Blakes was a standout performer, leading all scorers with an impressive 35 points. This marks her second game this season scoring over 30 points against Kentucky. Galvan also made a significant impact, contributing 20 points in 37 minutes of play, including the crucial game-winning shot.
Vanderbilt’s overall shooting performance was solid, with the team achieving 48 percent from the floor, although they struggled from beyond the arc, hitting only 29 percent of their three-point attempts. Throughout the match, Kentucky maintained a lead for the majority of the game, with Vanderbilt only ahead for a total of 3 minutes and 38 seconds.
The victory propels Vanderbilt’s record to 25-3 for the season, and it clinches a top four position in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). This achievement ensures that the Commodores will receive a double-bye in the upcoming SEC Tournament.
Head coach Shea Ralph praised her team’s collective effort, especially in the absence of key player Sasha. “We really needed everyone,” Ralph noted. “I could tell the week leading up, and especially this morning at shootaround, that they were locked in, not only for her but for the seniors. I love that we were able to win today.”
In addition to the women’s basketball success, other Vanderbilt sports teams also had noteworthy performances. The men’s lacrosse team faced a setback against No. 17 Denver, losing 17-9, while the women’s tennis team secured a decisive 6-1 win against Missouri. The baseball team triumphed over Marist with an 8-1 scoreline, and the bowling team finished fifth at the Big Red Invitational.
As Vanderbilt continues its season, all eyes will be on the upcoming SEC Tournament, where the Commodores aim to build on their current momentum.
