UPDATE: New Bedford police have arrested a 16-year-old Dartmouth teenager, charging him with motor vehicle homicide in the tragic hit-and-run death of Nicolasa Ventura Colaj, a devoted mother of three. This urgent announcement comes just days after the fatal incident, which occurred shortly after midnight on January 1, 2024, as Colaj was leaving a church gathering.

The teenager, whose identity remains undisclosed due to his age, faces serious charges after police confirmed a “critical breakthrough” in their investigation. Officials successfully located and seized the vehicle involved in the fatal crash, which took place on an avenue known for its family-owned shops and community atmosphere. Colaj was struck while crossing the street and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

New Bedford Police Chief Jason Thody expressed his condolences, stating,

“While nothing can undo this tragic loss, we are committed to seeing this investigation through and ensuring Nicolasa’s family sees accountability and justice.”

Her family, who had gathered to celebrate the New Year, is now mourning the loss of a vibrant member who worked at a local fish house and emigrated from Guatemala.

The teenager is scheduled for arraignment in juvenile court on Monday, according to statements from the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. Meanwhile, New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell praised the police for their swift actions, saying,

“I hope their pursuit of justice will bring some measure of consolation to Nicolasa’s family and friends.”

This heartbreaking incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the community, particularly as it follows another fatal pedestrian accident in New Bedford just a day earlier, where a 67-year-old man was also struck and killed. In response, police have announced enhanced enforcement of traffic laws aimed at ensuring public safety.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns a beloved figure. Colaj’s tragic death resonates deeply in New Bedford, where one in five residents are immigrants who play a crucial role in the local fishing industry. Officials are urging the public to remain vigilant about pedestrian safety as they work to prevent further tragedies.
