Central California Farmers Prepare for Major Winter Storms Now

Central California is on high alert as a series of winter storms is set to impact the region this weekend. AccuWeather has issued alerts, and a flood watch is in effect for the Sierra foothills from Friday evening through Monday afternoon. Meteorologist Stephen McCoy from the National Weather Service in Hanford warns of widespread precipitation, with the northern foothills expecting over 2 inches of rain in just 72 hours.

Farmers in the area are feeling the pressure as they harvest citrus and vegetable crops during this critical time. Ryan Jacobsen, CEO of the Fresno County Farm Bureau, emphasized the importance of accurate forecasting, stating, “We typically know at least a week out what’s coming, and that puts us in a very good position for preparing for types of events.”

Preparation includes essential tasks such as pruning and roping trees during dry windows. So far, the storms have been manageable, allowing the ground to absorb moisture without causing significant flooding. Jacobsen noted, “Based off how the series of storms have been coming in, they’re perfect amounts.”

Currently, the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada is being closely monitored, as it is critical for water availability during dry periods. The Department of Water Resources reported a snow depth of 24 inches and a snow water content of 5 inches, which is approximately 50% of the state average. Hydrometeorologist Angelique Fabbiani-Leon stated, “The statewide snowpack is at 71% of average,” but cautioned that it’s still early to determine how much water will be available for the season.

Despite the uncertainty, farmers maintain a sense of cautious optimism. Jacobsen expressed hope, saying, “It’s an exciting time right now but it’s cautious optimism hoping that we’re going to continue to see these storms roll in.”
