Colorado Residents Turn to Home Battery Backup Amid Outage Surge
UPDATE: As electrical outages increase across Colorado, homeowners are urgently seeking solutions to maintain power during disruptions. In response to a troubling rise in outages, many are now investing in home battery backup systems combined with solar panels to ensure energy resiliency.
Residents of Boulder, Larimer, and metro Denver counties are facing a harsh reality: more frequent power outages due to extreme weather conditions and wildfire risks. Earlier this year, in mid-January, Xcel Energy enacted a Public Safety Power Shutoff affecting around 9,000 customers in northern Colorado, citing “extreme wildfire danger” with wind gusts reaching up to 70 miles per hour. Some areas experienced prolonged outages lasting multiple days, leading to food spoilage and loss of heating and security systems.
The trend is alarming. Reports indicate that outage minutes in Colorado have more than doubled in the past decade. Residents are increasingly questioning the reliability of the aging power grid. This shift is prompting homeowners to turn to innovative solutions like home battery backup systems.
Home battery backup allows homeowners to store energy generated from their rooftop solar panels for use when the grid fails. Unlike traditional solar-only systems that shut down during outages, these batteries provide power during critical moments. As Steve and Allison, a couple from Colorado, noted, “We’ve had two power outages here since the beginning of the year, and our neighbors have been quick to note that we’re the only ones on the block who had power.”
The urgency for such measures is underscored by conditions across the state. In December 2025, Xcel Energy issued multiple planned shutoffs in preparation for severe weather, affecting tens of thousands of residents. With these challenges, battery systems offer essential support, allowing homeowners to power essential loads such as refrigerators and lights, or even keep their entire homes running.
Beyond immediate power needs, battery backup systems also promote energy independence. By storing energy generated from solar panels or purchasing it during low-cost periods, homeowners can save on electricity costs. Steve and Allison shared their experience, stating, “We’re able to do energy arbitrage with it and sell energy back when it’s [credited at the highest rate].”
Moreover, home battery backup contributes significantly to environmental goals. By reducing dependence on fossil fuels, these systems help homeowners lower their carbon footprints. According to Namaste Solar, battery storage “puts you on the path to a zero-emissions home” and aligns with broader clean energy initiatives.
The financial burden of investing in battery backup can be alleviated through available rebates and incentives in Colorado. Programs like Xcel Energy’s Renewable Battery Connect offer upfront rebates, while the Colorado state Residential Energy Storage Credit provides up to 10% off the purchase cost of eligible battery storage equipment.
As extreme weather events continue to challenge the stability of Colorado’s energy grid, more residents are prioritizing energy resiliency. Namaste Solar, a Colorado-based solar energy company, is at the forefront of this transition, offering tailored solutions for homeowners. Their team of advisors assists customers in adding battery storage to existing systems or designing new solar-plus-storage setups.
For homeowners interested in exploring how battery backup can protect their homes, reduce emissions, and lower energy costs, Namaste Solar is available for consultations. Interested parties can reach them at 720.386.2174 or visit namastesolar.com/transparent for more information.
The shift towards home battery backup is not just a trend; it is becoming a vital strategy for ensuring sustainability and independence in an uncertain energy landscape. As Colorado faces an increasing number of outages, taking proactive steps now could mean the difference between comfort and darkness in the coming months.
