Copenhagen Falls to Stamford in Class D Regional Final, 56-46
UPDATE: In a gripping showdown, the Copenhagen Golden Knights’ season came to a heart-wrenching end as they fell to Stamford, 56-46, in the Class D regional final held at Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton, NY on March 15, 2026. This significant loss means Copenhagen will not advance to the girls basketball state tournament, despite a commendable journey this season.
Copenhagen struggled early, trailing 29-23 at halftime. Although they managed to narrow the gap to just five points with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Stamford seized control, never allowing Copenhagen to close the distance again. The Golden Knights, with a final record of 12-11, showcased resilience throughout the game but ultimately fell short to a formidable Stamford team.
This season marked a unique path for the Golden Knights, who were one of only two teams from Section III to earn an at-large bid for the state tournament after losing their sectional final. The other team, the East Syracuse Minoa boys in Class D, also faced elimination. Copenhagen’s previous setback was a narrow defeat against the defending state champion, LaFargeville, in the sectional final, concluding that game at 49-45.
In a strategic move, LaFargeville opted to face off against Chateaugay in a subregional matchup instead of competing against Stamford, ultimately losing that game 42-37. This decision left the door open for Copenhagen, who had been striving for a chance at redemption.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights will aim to rebuild as they retain their two leading scorers, juniors Halle Miller and Mollie Babcock, for the upcoming season. Fans are hopeful for a return to form as the team prepares for another competitive year.
As the dust settles on this season, the emotional toll of the loss is palpable. The Golden Knights’ journey may have ended, but their determination and spirit have left a lasting impression on their supporters, setting the stage for future endeavors.
Stay tuned for updates on next season’s developments and the upcoming state tournament matchups.
