Ernie Clement Sets Playoff Record with 30 Hits in Game 7
UPDATE: Toronto Blue Jays infielder Ernie Clement made history on October 28, 2023, by achieving a stunning 30 hits in a single postseason during Game 7 of the World Series. This remarkable feat places him at the pinnacle of MLB records, surpassing the previous mark of 29 hits held by Randy Arozarena of the Tampa Bay Rays.
Clement’s record-breaking performance came in a nail-biting finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he recorded three hits, including a crucial leadoff double in the eighth inning that broke the record. The Blue Jays and Dodgers were tied at four in the ninth inning, but Clement’s near-game-winning drive to left-center was caught on the warning track, sending the game into extra innings.
The emotional weight of this achievement is significant as Clement, who is playing in his first postseason, has now extended his hitting streak to 13 games, a new Blue Jays postseason record. Previously, Toronto catcher Pat Borders held the record with a 12-game streak back in 1992.
In Game 7, which took place in Toronto, Clement’s three hits raised his postseason batting average to an impressive .417. He has notched one home run and nine RBIs throughout the playoffs, showcasing his pivotal role in the Blue Jays’ journey.
Prior to this postseason, Clement’s journey has not been without its challenges. Drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in 2017, he faced setbacks, including being designated for assignment in September 2022. He later signed with the Athletics but was soon released. After joining the Blue Jays on a minor league deal, he has since blossomed, playing in a career-high 157 games during the regular season and hitting .277 with nine home runs and 50 RBIs.
As the Blue Jays face the aftermath of their World Series defeat, Clement’s remarkable achievements provide a glimmer of hope for the future. Fans are left buzzing about what this means for the team’s prospects moving forward, especially with Clement’s recent surge in performance.
With the postseason now concluded, all eyes will be on Clement as he reflects on his historic season and prepares for what’s next in his career. Stay tuned for further updates on the Blue Jays and Clement’s promising future.
